Your Hands, Your Best Friend

Your hands fix bolts, move steel and sign off every finished axle. They are small but priceless. Most shop-floor injuries hit hands or fingers, so give them the same care you would give your mobile phone. Slow down, clear the work area and never rush a cut or lift. One careful second can save weeks off healing from unforeseen injury.

Spot the hazard before you grab

Look, think, touch. Sharp edges on a bracket, a wrench that can slip, hot coolant on a surface. These can all cause injury. Pause before you reach in. Wait until the blade stops, use a push stick, pull hands clear of pinch points. If you cannot see the danger, use a tool, not a finger.

Pick the right protection

Different jobs need different gloves:

  1. Cut-resistant knit for sheet metal and deburring.
  2. Chemical gauntlets for oils and cleaning fluids.
  3. Impact gloves when using hammers or pressing parts into place.

Inspect before each use! A torn glove is no protection. Change gloves as soon as they are soaked, cut or slick with grease. Gloves should not be worn near moving machinery if there’s a risk they could get caught.

Keep Hands Healthy for Life

Wash off metal dust and oil straight away with warm water and mild soap. Dry fully, then apply barrier cream to protect the skin from letting in chemicals. Swap vibrating tools every 15 minutes and stretch fingers during breaks. Report any tingling early, vibration damage cannot be undone. Look after your hands now and they will look after you later.

Prevent HAVS: Keep Your Hands and Arms Healthy

Repeated vibration can cause Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS), affecting grip, fine motor tasks, and cold tolerance. You’re particularly at risk if you regularly use hammer tools for over 15 min/day or rotary and other action tools for more than an hour. Always use the correct tools, take regular breaks, and protect your hands and arms to stay safe and healthy for the long term.

9 Rules of Hand Safety

Always choose gloves that match the job: anti-cut, heat-resistant, chemical-safe or vibration-damping. Gloves must be clean, dry and undamaged: Replace torn ones straight away.

Never wear gloves near lathes, drills or milling machines. They can get pulled in and cause serious injury.

Use only approved soaps or cleaners. No hot water, no harsh chemicals. They damage the skin.

Apply skin cream (preferably barrier cream) before and after work. It blocks oil, coolant and metal dust from getting in.

Never grab chips, swarf or sharp metal with bare hands. Use hooks, brushes or pliers instead.

Guards, covers and suction systems protect more than gloves ever will. Use them first.

Redness, cracks or rashes? Tell your supervisor or company doctor early. Do not wait.

Limit use of grinders and hammers. Swap tools regularly to protect your nerves.

Safety starts and will always start with you! Turn safety into your personal routine. It’s easy. Just like fastening your seat belt.
